First Call

E.S.F. SOLIDARITY VILLAGE
... Another Economy is Possible ...

Inspired by the UK LETS Co-operate Conference in 2002 and the Village Economie Social et Solidaire (VESS) at the ESF 2003 in Paris, we propose a Solidarity Village for the ESF 2004. We invite you to join us in creating a special area within the ESF for co-operative projects in response to social inequalities due to the capitalist (neoliberal) system. We present options towards a sustainable economy at the service of humanity, answering to human rights and environmental needs, not the profit motive. The Social & Solidarity Economy proposes a more equal distribution of wealth: If you think that another world is possible, know that another economy is already happening!

We want to create a dynamic and participative “Open Space” to provide information about practical projects. We will also debate wider topics of the Economy, including Community Banking, Co-operatives, Social Housing, Sustainable Development, Transport and Energy, Recycling, Organic and Fair Trade Produce, and in particular, Local Currencies and Monetary Reform. We hope to demonstrate Computer Access & Uses for Community Networking and Trading, as well as reinforcing the Social & Solidarity Economy networks.

The Solidarity Village runs from 13th-17th October at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, Holborn, London WC1R 4RL which is home of the South Place Ethical Society, and a favourite venue for alternative political debate. Due to the enormous response in terms of topics for discussion, the project has now expanded into Clement House, at the London School of Economics, 15 minutes away: both are near Holborn Tube on the Piccadilly and Central lines. More venues will be added if there is demand.

We plan to include: “Open Space” • Talks • Seminars • Workshops
• Films & Videos • Discussion • Performance • Stands • Posters • Papers
• Leaflets • Books & Magazines • Cafe • Wellbeing Space • Creche

This is an autonomous project within the main ESF and will be included in the main programme. We are developing our own space because of the complexity and sensitivity of the monetary reform agenda, to nurture the positive aspects of co-operation and solidarity, and to create a caring community within the ESF, which is a major event where 30,000 participants are expected at venues in North London, Bloomsbury, and Holborn.

The programme is in the making. Some events have been decided, others are still being developed. We need sponsorship in cash or kind to support the costs of venue hire and publicity. We invite your participation with all aspects of the planning, academic and practical, to propose specific items at any level, and to coordinate continuous spaces. The project is being logged as it develops and further details of how to participate will be posted there. Please indicate your interest by replying to admin@solidarityvillage.org
