LOCAL SOCIAL FORUMS - plenary discussion - in development

So far, supporters of the following groups have expressed interest in building the ESF session on CITIES at the main ESF venue - time to be confirmed.
London Social Forum (London)
Greek Social Forum (Athens/Olympics)
INURA, (the International Network for Urban Research and Action)

What is the place of cities within neo-liberal globalisation? Endlessly competing for big projects such as the Olympics and/or the international sector and finance. As in the "London Plan", neo-liberal policies produce inequality both globally and locally in the city itself. How can we challenge, and dream up alternatives to the present urban dilemma. Cities themselves, like Porto Alegre can become sites of resistance and new possibilities. New forms of participatory democracy offer hope to the possibility of citizens reclaiming the city. What kind of city do we want?
If your group is interested too, then please send us suggestions for the content of the session.

Greetings from the Boston Social Forum,
One of our coordinators, Suren Moodliar of the North American Alliance for Fair Employment (www.fairjobs.org), is planning to represent us at the ESF, has training as an urban planner, and would be interested in participating in the proposed Cities seminar. We think our experience holding a forum right before the Democratic National Convention in Boston would be relevant to the discussion.

Also, Suren and I currently have an article on our forum on ZNet that we'd like to circulate around ESF circles. We'd encourage you all to read it, comment on it, and let us know what listservs and websites might be good places to get it out more broadly.
